European venture funds are now actively prioritizing sector-specific operators and deep-tech specialists over generic finance backgrounds — a real structural shift, not just optics. That was the premise of this South Summit Catalyst Stage panel: the old image of a venture capitalist, homogenous and finance-only, is fading, and what's replacing it is a much wider set of profiles.

That shift changes how angel investing works too. It isn't a solo hobby — because returns follow a power law, the investors who do well build diversified portfolios across 10 to 40 startups, treating it as disciplined, team-based work rather than picking a handful of favorites. And getting into that world isn't a networking numbers game. Cold outreach on LinkedIn has high friction and low response rates for a reason — what actually gets an investor's attention is leading with value: proprietary deal flow, real technical expertise, or an LP relationship you can genuinely offer, not a generic introduction request.

The part I'd want any founder in the room to remember isn't about breaking in — it's about who you let in once you're the one raising. Institutional venture funds operate under real fiduciary mandates to return multiples on the capital they've raised, which means the growth expectations they bring aren't optional extras, they're baked into the fund's structure. That's not a criticism of VCs — it's a reason to evaluate investor alignment carefully before you take the check, because the pressure that comes with institutional capital is structural, not personal.

On the panel: Paula Blazquez Solano, Managing Partner at For Founders Capital (Spain), 13 years in venture capital starting in San Francisco; Amanda Nolen, EdTech and future-of-work expert advising global enterprises; and Aleksandra Baka, Corporate Venture Capital leader representing a major international bank with deep expertise in the Central and Eastern European tech market.
